Insufficient hormone production by the endocrine glands can be replaced either with identical hormones processed synthetically
(thyroid hormones, cortisol) or biotechnologically (growth hormone, gonadotropins) or with their synthetic analogues with improved
function (desmopressin; aldosterone, testosterone, oestrogen and progestin analogues). Due to the number of preparations, the options
to treat hormone deficiencies vary greatly. For the treatment of central diabetes insipidus, only one preparation by one company
is available; to treat growth hormone deficiency, seven analogical preparations by various companies are available; similar hormones
by three companies are available for the treatment of hypothyroidism; glucocorticoid deficiency is mainly treated with hydrocortison
tablets or injections and/or prednisone; aldosterone replacement is only possible with fludrocortison that is currently not registered
in this country; there is a wider choice in the case of testosterone deficiency in men and the widest range of preparations are available
for the treatment of oestrogen deficiency in women.
