Mucoadhesion as a phenomenon used for drug application into the oral cavity

The second article from the series dealing with the oral cavity, as a suitable application site for a range of drugs, is intended to

describe mucoadhesion phenomenon, which is in scientific literature widely discussed. This process can provide, based on the

creation of adhesive bonds to the mucous layer, prolonged retention of the applied drug, and thereby significantly improve patient

compliance, effectiveness of therapy, drug bioavailability and contribute to the overall treatment improvement. Mucoadhesion

is a complex process, which may be affected by many factors and in particular by selecting a suitable carrier in the formulation

of the adhesive dosage form.

Keywords: oromucosal application, mucoadhesion, mucoadhesive polymers, lectins
