Among the facilities for the treatment of the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) herbal preparations are used by millions of menaffected by BPH, though these drugs are not recommended by urological societies due to lack of compliance with the requirements of the medicineof evidence. The results with herbal pharmacy announced in the older literature have a low validity due insufficient standardisation of thepreparations and due to the weak design of the studies. In well-designed studies some positive effects on the low urinary tract syndrome (LUTS) were shown, however, these did not differ dramatically from the effects of placebo. Among the herbal drugs obtainable in our pharmacies themost frequent main component is the extract from saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), which is also the most popular in other countries. With exceptionof three herbal drugs, which are registered by State Institute of Drug Control (SÚKL), the remaining 23 are listed as dietary supplements.
