Acute respiratory infections are a major cause of morbidity across all age groups. A wide range of respiratory viruses have been detected in acute respiratory tract infections: influenza A and B (flu-viruses) and non- flu viruses: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), adenoviruses (AV), human rhinoviruses (HRV) and coronaviruses OC 43 and 22 9E. The recent advances in molecular technology have enabled the detection of several new viral agents: human metapneumovirus (hMPV), coronaviruses NL63 (HcoV-NL63) and HKU1 (HcoV-HKU1). Dabigatran-etexilate (Pradaxa®) in prevention of strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation

Dabigatran-etexilate belongs to a new group of oral anticoagulants which are currently being implemented in several indications in clinical practice. Dabigatran is the only available oral direct thrombin inhibitor with favourable pharmacological properties which enable uniform dosage without a need for monitoring of the anticoagulant effect. In addition to the gastrointestinal adverse effects which were discussed in the first part of this article, oncologic patients suffer from dermal and hematologic adverse effects and persisting fatigue, too. Although the therapy of these adverse effects is mainly at the hands of the physician, the pharmacist can give adice and help the patient especially by common information about the symptoms of adverse effects and explanation of their reasons or by reccomendation of factual regime precautions and OTC drugs which can reduce the adverse effects or prevent them.

Pelargonium sidoides is a perennial plant from Southern Africa, where it has been used for centuries in a traditional medicine. Native African people use its roots mainly for treating respiratory system diseases. Recent studies confirmed antimicrobial and immunostimulatory properties of this plant and it is currently used in Western medicine as a cold treatment.

The present article provides a brief overview of physiological peculiarities in children. These are most often encountered in the neonatal period and infancy. Prevalence of infant colics is approximately 10–20 % and are usually present at 3 months of age. The cause of colics is unknown. It is defined as uncalmable crying in otherwise-healthy well-developing infant without any signs of chronic disease. There is no known causal therapy.
