Stevia rebaudiana is a perennial herb native to South America (Paraguay). South-American Indians have since time immemorial used stevia as a sweetener and in traditional medicine. Developed countries have high rates of obesity and diabetes, so low-calorie sweeteners attract much interest. Stevia extract and compounds isolated from it have been used for decades in some Asian countries. In the European Union, its use in the food industry was permitted in 2011, and since then it has gained considerable popularity. Besides its zero calorie content, Stevia also exhibits anti-diabetic properties, so its use by diabetics is particularly advisable.

The article introduces the key innovations in the field of parenteral nutrition. The first part describes new approaches in the clinical practice, particularly new recommendations for the intake of macronutrients and micronutrients. Next, a basic overview is presented of the current modern instrumentation necessary for safe and comfortable preparation of parenteral nutrition in pharmacies. Finally, a new method of administration is mentioned – mobile parenteral nutrition.

This case report presents a patient with hyperuricemia and gouty tophi on her hands. This patient is also allergic to usual urate-lowering therapy. Clinical pharmacist’s interventions (hydration, forced diuresis, support of glomerular filtration rate) are discussed. More options of urate-lowering therapy, other than allopurinol and febuxostat, are described.
